Chuck Taylor is the ring name of Dustin Howard, an independent professional wrestler from western Kentucky. Chuck also occasionally wrestles under the moniker of “The Kentucky Gentleman.”
Working with Chuck, we designed a very simple site to act as a hub for his online presence on social media platforms and merchandise store as well as a place for his fans to keep up with his appearances at upcoming events. We also built out simple image and video galleries for Chucks fans to browse.
Aesthetically, Chuck requested that the final design stand out from other professional wrestling websites and not take on the over-the-top qualities that are generally associated with the wrestling industry. We drew inspiration from Chuck’s southern roots and the use of the nickname, “The Kentucky Gentleman,” to design a header and logotype that’s reminiscent of a nice bourbon label, using the tagline “Kentucky Straight Professional Wrestling.”
With a very small amount of textual content, the site takes on a form that resembles a web app more than a typical informational website, and the responsive design functions well across all screen sizes.
Since launching in early 2015, the site has been performing well, and we’re proud of the positive response from Chuck and his fans and grateful for the opportunity to work on such an interesting site.
Matt Brantley is an artist from Kentucky whose work incorporates images of wildlife and nature to visually represent his own personal mythology and symbols. His work elicits such a powerful emotional response and a very specific mood of wonderment and even nostalgia, and we tried to capture that overall tone for his website by incorporating subdued background images of the landscapes that serve as inspiration for much of his work.
An artist’s signature can be as important as the work itself and it’s used to signify many things, including ownership/authorship of the created image and the completion of the piece. The signature can also serve as a great insight into the artist’s personality and identity. Instead of designing any kind of symbol or logotype to masthead Matt’s site, we opted to reproduce his own signature, placing it front and center as a clear statement, “This is who I am, and this is the work that I’ve created with my own hands.”
Matt’s vision for the site helped guide the overall design process, and we worked closely with him to ensure that the tone of the final product complimented the work that he wanted to display. The end result is heavily inspired by the landscape of the floodplains along the Mississippi river that served as a backdrop to Matt’s childhood and greatly influenced his philosophies on life and art. By utilizing subdued photographs of these areas, we were able to provide more context to his art and enhance the stories that he is trying to tell.
Nicholas J. Johnson is a liar, a man who spins yarns and deceives the eye.
He is a multi-award winning magician and comedian, a best-selling author and a collector of cons, scams and fraud.
Whatever you do, don’t trust him.
Nicholas approached us to create a new logo and website to let his followers discover what he’s up to online and where to see him in person. Our goal was to remain true to the visual tone of the old site while updating the overall user experience and bringing the site up to modern standards.
We started the process by creating a logo that was inspired by the aesthetic of the old site, had its visual roots in the Vaudeville style of the early 20th century. The inclusion of the 4 suits in a deck of cards and a slightly disjointed section of the logo were meant to elude to the card tricks and “smoke and mirrors” or slight-of-hand aspects of Nick’s performances.
We decided to really push the vaudeville theme for the rest of the site, as it perfectly encapsulated Nick’s personality and performances. Taking what already existed, we refined and redesigned the sites style while focusing on much more organized page layouts while including small details and flourishes that accentuated his character and style.
The founders of Nxt-ID have been involved in advanced biometric and security technology development for leading organizations within government and the corporate sector. The company, which was founded in 2011, has established an impressive portfolio of technology patents and biometric security solutions for corporations, government agencies and consumers.
We worked alongside Nxt-ID to bring their online presence up to modern web standards and make the site look more friendly and professional. We ditched the dull white-on-grey, boxed in layout of the old site in favor of a much more open design that gives the content room to breathe, and put smore focus on the company’s products through the use of a slideshow and full-width, high resolution images.
The look of the site was influenced by the clean and modern look of Nxt-ID’s products, and we used their existing logo paired with a rich, dark green to create contrast and a sleek, high-quality brand image.
